Introducing Co-Author: Write Together on Novvler
Writing a novel doesn't have to be a solo journey. Today we're launching Co-Author — a new way to invite other writers into your Novvler project so you can build stories together.
How It Works
Inside any project, you'll see a new Co-Author button in the workspace header. Click it, enter your collaborator's email address, choose their role, and they're in.
Two roles are available:
- Viewer — Can read every chapter, section, character sheet, and note in the project, but can't change anything. Perfect for beta readers, editors reviewing a draft, or writing partners you want to keep in the loop.
- Co-Author (Editor) — Full read-and-write access. They can create cards, edit chapters, update synopses — everything the project owner can do, except managing collaborators.
Where It Works
Co-Author is available on both the web app and iOS. Shared projects appear in your collaborator's project list with a clear badge so they always know which projects are theirs and which are shared.
On iOS, viewers see a "View Only" indicator and the editor is locked to prevent accidental edits. Co-Authors get the full mobile editing experience.
Built for Trust
Only the project owner can invite or remove collaborators. Collaborators can't delete the project, manage billing, or change other people's roles. Your manuscript stays under your control.
If you change your mind, removing a collaborator is one click — they immediately lose access to the project and all its contents.
What's Next
This is the foundation for deeper collaboration on Novvler. Co-Author today uses a simple last-write-wins model — if two people edit the same card, the most recent save takes effect. It's practical and works well for the way most writing partners operate (different chapters, different characters, different scenes).
Down the road, we're exploring real-time co-editing — Google Docs-style live cursors and conflict-free merging — so two authors can work on the same passage simultaneously. That's a bigger undertaking, but Co-Author lays the groundwork.
