Import Your Manuscript, Keep Your Structure

Novvler 3 min read

You've been writing in Word, Google Docs, or a plain text editor. You have chapters. Inside those chapters, you have scenes or sections. You want to move to Novvler without flattening all of that into a pile of cards.

Starting today, Novvler's import preserves your heading structure. Drop in a manuscript and your chapters arrive with their sections already nested inside — exactly the way you wrote them.

How It Works

Novvler reads your document's heading hierarchy and turns it into a proper outline:

  • H1 headings (or "Chapter N" lines) become chapter cards.
  • H2 headings become section cards nested under their chapter.
  • Everything below a heading — paragraphs, dialogue, description — becomes the content of that card.
  • If a chapter has body text before its first section, that text stays as the chapter's own content.

No manual splitting. No dragging cards around after import. Your structure is already there.

Supported Formats

  • .docx — Word documents. Novvler reads Heading 1 and Heading 2 paragraph styles directly from the XML. Bold, italic, and H3 formatting are preserved in the card content.
  • .md — Markdown files. # lines become chapters, ## lines become sections.
  • .txt — Plain text. Lines matching "Chapter 1", "Chapter IV", or # Title create chapters. ## lines create sections.

A Quick Example

Say you have a Markdown file like this:

# The Storm
## Arrival
The ferry pitched hard to starboard...

## The Lighthouse
Rain hammered the glass...

# The Calm
## Morning
Sunlight cut through the fog...

After import, you'll see two chapters — The Storm and The Calm — each with their sections nested inside. Two clicks and you're editing "The Lighthouse" right where it belongs in your outline.

What If There Are No Headings?

If your document doesn't use headings at all, Novvler imports the entire text as a single chapter called "Imported Chapter." You can split it into sections later from the outline view.

Try It

Open your project in app.novvler.com, click Import in the toolbar, and drop in your file. Your chapters and sections will appear in the sidebar, ready to write.

Bring your manuscript. Keep your structure. Dive deep.
