Certified Human: Prove Every Word Is Yours

Novvler 5 min read

Update (Sep 2026): Authorship now lives on the page — typed text marks green, accepted AI marks pink, mixed lines you can re-tag. See See Which Words Are Yours. Project-level “Certified Human” gold/silver/bronze claims stay gated; the badge UI no longer overclaims. The post below is historical context for the earlier certification idea.

Every writing tool gives you AI. Novvler gives you something no one else can: proof that you didn't use it.

Today we're launching Certified Human — a new authorship verification system built into Novvler. If you write your novel without AI assistance, you earn a gold badge that certifies your work is 100% human-written. Not a self-reported checkbox. Not an honour system. A server-verified stamp backed by keystroke data and AI usage logs.

Why This Matters

We're in an era where any text could have been written by AI. Agents, publishers, and readers are asking the same question: "Did a human actually write this?"

For writers who put in the work — who spend months crafting sentences, rewriting scenes, agonising over word choices — there's no way to prove it. Until now.

Novvler already tracks every AI interaction server-side. Every call, every suggestion, every accept and reject. We also track every keystroke on the client side — not the content of what you type, but the effort: how many characters you physically typed versus how many appeared via AI or paste.

Certified Human turns that data into a verifiable badge.

Three Tiers

Not every writer avoids AI entirely, and that's fine. We've designed three tiers so writers at different comfort levels can still earn recognition for their human contribution:

  • ✍️ Certified Human (Gold) — Zero AI suggestions accepted. Not a single rewrite, expansion, or generation. Every word typed by the author. This is the rarest badge.
  • 📝 Human Written (Silver) — The only AI used was spelling and grammar corrections. All creative decisions — every sentence, every plot twist, every character choice — are purely human.
  • 🧑‍💻 Human Led (Bronze) — Less than 5% of the manuscript's weighted word count came from AI. The author led the creative work with minimal AI support.

How Verification Works

When you open the Certification panel in your project, Novvler calculates your eligibility in real-time by checking three things:

1. AI usage logs. Every AI call flows through our server — there's no way to use AI in Novvler without it being recorded. We check how many suggestions you accepted, what kind they were (correction vs. generation), and how much text was involved.

2. Keystroke ratio. We compare your total typed characters against your total word count. A genuine 80,000-word novel typed from scratch should show roughly 400,000+ typed characters. If someone pastes in 80,000 words but only typed 3,000 characters, the numbers don't add up.

3. Minimum threshold. Your project needs at least 1,000 words and a 60% typed-to-total ratio. This prevents trivial projects from earning a badge and ensures the certification represents real writing effort.

What About Paste?

We don't block paste. That would be absurd — writers cut and paste to reorganise paragraphs, copy character names, move scenes around. Blocking paste would punish normal writing to guard against an edge case.

Instead, we let the data speak. Paste is allowed, but it doesn't count toward your typed effort. If you write 80,000 words and 65,000 of those characters were typed keystroke by keystroke inside Novvler, you've earned your badge regardless of how many times you pasted a character name or moved a paragraph.

The philosophy is simple: we don't restrict how you write — we measure what you typed.

What About External AI?

Could someone write in ChatGPT and paste the output into Novvler? Technically yes — and the typed ratio check catches this. An 80,000-word novel that was mostly pasted in will have a typed ratio far below 60%, and certification won't issue.

No system is perfectly cheat-proof. But Certified Human makes cheating difficult and detectable rather than trivially easy. For publishers and agents, that's a meaningful signal — far better than a self-reported "I didn't use AI" checkbox.

Built for the Future

This is Phase 1. Right now, Certified Human is a badge visible in your Novvler workspace. What's coming next:

  • Signed certificates — A cryptographically signed document you can attach to manuscript submissions, proving your authorship claims are backed by server data.
  • Public verification — A URL where agents and publishers can verify a certificate is authentic.
  • Export metadata — Certification data embedded in your EPUB and DOCX exports.

Our goal is to go from "know every word is yours" to "prove every word is yours." No other writing tool has the server-side AI logging and keystroke tracking to make this claim credibly.

Who Is This For?

If you're a writer who takes pride in your craft — who wants to stand out in a world flooding with AI-generated content — Certified Human is your stamp. It tells readers, agents, and publishers: this author did the work.

And if you use AI as a tool to help you write? That's fine too. The AI Stats Panel still shows your full authorship breakdown. Certified Human isn't about judging how you write — it's about celebrating the writers who choose to go it alone.

Try It Now

Prefer the live on-page marks: open a chapter, type, accept AI, watch green and pink. For the older certification panel idea, see the workspace toolbar — tiers stay gated until marks are the foundation.

Happy writing — with or without AI. Either way, you'll know exactly where your words came from.
